About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga
This is a fulltime permanent opportunity based in our Mt Eden office in Auckland.
The Manager, Practice and Performance provides leadership across regional planning, performance, reporting, and practice functions. This role works closely with the Director of Education and regional leadership team to ensure nationally consistent practice, high-quality advice, and strong alignment between regional delivery and Ministry priorities.
You will lead a team responsible for strengthening practice quality, performance oversight, strategic planning, and continuous improvement across the region. The role also serves as a key connection between regional teams and national centres of expertise, ensuring local delivery is informed by national priorities and best practice.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading regional planning, performance, and reporting activities.
- Providing strategic advice and support to regional leadership.
- Strengthening quality, consistency, and continuous improvement of practice.
- Building effective relationships across the Ministry and education sector.
- Supporting evidence-based decision making through data and insights.
Salary range: $142,856 - $178,570 per annum + KiwiSaver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

To be successful in this role, you will bring significant leadership experience in a complex environment and a track record of delivering strategic outcomes through collaboration and influence.
You will also have:
- Experience leading teams, programmes of work, and organisational change.
- Strong strategic thinking and the ability to translate insights into action.
- Proven experience building trusted relationships and partnerships to achieve shared outcomes.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to provide advice to senior leaders.
- Experience using data and evidence to inform decision making and improve performance.
- Knowledge of the education sector and public service environment is highly desirable.
- A commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and achieving equitable outcomes for learners.
- The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.
About our group and team | Mātau rōpū ake
Te Mahau | Education Services has accountability for delivering national equity and access services, support to early learning and schooling operations, ākonga support services, and improvement services across the education system.
Tāmaki Herenga Manawa | Central and East Auckland is a frontline group that provides integrated support and services to the education sector across central and east Auckland, including Waiheke and Aotea/Great Barrier Island. We work closely with schools, kura, early learning services, whānau, iwi, hapū, and communities to improve outcomes for learners and ensure services are responsive to local needs.
The Practice and Performance team sits at the centre of regional decision-making and continuous improvement. Working across Te Mahau, national teams, and sector partners, the team helps drive consistent practice, informed decision-making, ensuring equitable and excellent outcomes for learners across the region.
