About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga
We’re looking for a UX/UI Designer to help design simple, accessible, and user-friendly digital services that support learners, educators, and whānau across New Zealand.
- In this role, you’ll work closely with developers, business analysts, product owners and business teams to turn user needs into intuitive websites and applications.
- You’ll work with our established design system and help expand it across more of our digital services, working with more experienced designers in a small specialist team.
- You’ll support user research, create wireframes and prototypes, and help improve how people interact with our digital tools.
This is a hands-on design role where your work will directly contribute to better education outcomes for all.
Salary range: $84,425 - $102,271 per annum + 3% kiwi saver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

About you | Mōhou ake
We’re looking for a UX/UI Designer who’s passionate about creating digital experiences that are simple, inclusive, and user-focused. You’ll be an all-rounder, confident working across the full UX and UI spectrum—from research and wireframes to polished interfaces.
To succeed in this role, you’ll bring:
- Hands-on experience with design tools like Figma or similar
- Keen to learn and stretch your skills on a variety of projects and products
- Strong time management and the ability to present your work clearly
- A pragmatic, can-do attitude and solid problem-solving skills
- The ability to switch between teams, products, and design challenges
- A collaborative mindset, empathy for users, and a drive to improve
You will also offer:
- Experience applying user-centred design methods and creating wireframes, mock-ups and prototypes
- Strong skills in user research, useability testing, and interpreting feedback to improve designs
- A portfolio of professional UX/UI design work that shows your ability to solve real problems
- The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.

You’ll be part of a collaborative and supportive design team within the Analysis & Design practice team. This team makes up one of several practice teams wihtin Matihiko| Digital which is made up of a wide range of skilled, expert digital professionals. Together we provide expertise to deliver great digital products and services for the education system. We are part of Te Pou Rangatōpū, the Ministry’s corporate group.
