About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga
We’re looking for a Senior Database Administrator senior specialist within Te Pou Kōrero | Digital and Data. You’ll own mission‑critical database services across on premises, hybrid, and multi‑cloud environments, ensuring they’re secure, resilient, and high‑performing.
This role plays a key part in our cloud and data modernisation journey, using automation and DevOps practices to build smarter platforms. You’ll work closely with cloud, infrastructure, application, and security teams to design and optimise database solutions across Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services, while acting as a senior technical authority for database services.
Salary range: $100,296 - $121,490 per annum + 3% kiwi saver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

About you | Mōhou ake
To be successful in this role, you will work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders across Digital and Data and the wider Ministry. You will bring a strong service mindset, sound technical judgement, and the ability to balance traditional database administration with modern cloud and platform engineering practices.
You will also offer:
- Extensive experience administering enterprise SQL Server environments supporting mission critical systems
- Experience operating database platforms across on premises, Microsoft Azure, and AWS environments
- Proven experience designing and supporting high availability and disaster recovery solutions in hybrid environments
- Experience planning and executing database migrations between on premises and cloud platforms
- Demonstrated application of DevOps principles, including automation and Infrastructure as Code
- Experience working in Agile delivery environments
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non technical audiences
- The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.
You will also demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and professional development, and the ability to mentor and uplift others without formal line management responsibility.

Te Pou Kōrero | Digital and Data sets the digital and data direction that enables modern, efficient and seamless experience for those interacting with education services. The Group is accountable for the digital and data strategies and enabling capability plans, as well as maintaining the products and services. The Group provides overall leadership for development and implementation of integrated education and digital and data solutions working closely with other parts of the education sector and Ministry, enabled by a strong evaluation and evidence base.
The Group has both internal and external customers – with a strong focus on innovation by exploring new technologies and overseeing research, testing and prototyping activities.
