About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga

 

This is a one-year fixed term, full-time position.

 

As a senior member of the team, the Senior Data Analyst plays a key role in designing, implementing, and managing data processes that underpin the Ministry’s data products and services. This role champions best-practice data management and works closely with stakeholders and colleagues to ensure the needs of data users are not only met but exceeded.

 

You will lead efforts to identify and resolve systemic issues affecting data integrity, propose practical solutions, and collaborate with key stakeholders to implement improvements. You’ll also help shape team priorities, mentor junior team members, and promote consistent, high-quality data practices across the team.

 

Your work will directly support the integrity of foundational data that informs decision-making across the New Zealand education system — making a meaningful impact at a national level.

 

Salary range: $99,496 - $120,690 per annum + 3% KiwiSaver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

About you | Mōhou ake

 

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

 

  • Extensive experience working with complex datasets in a large or multifaceted organisation, including data sourcing, processing, and quality assurance.
  • Strong technical proficiency, including advanced skills in SQL or SAS to manipulate and analyse large datasets.
  • A strategic mindset, with the ability to identify systemic issues, design and implement improvements, and contribute to business planning and operational decision-making.
  • Experience working in a data systems environment, including collaborating with digital and IT teams to support the implementation of system upgrades and enhancements. Familiarity with Agile development processes and the ability to translate data requirements into actionable system changes is highly valued.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to present technical information clearly to non-technical audiences and build effective partnerships across teams and agencies.
  • Proven leadership and mentoring capability, with a track record of coaching others, sharing knowledge, and contributing to a high-performing, collaborative team culture.
  • A commitment to best-practice data management, with a focus on improving the quality, consistency, and usability of data products and processes.
  • An understanding of and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including a developing capability in Māori Crown relations and cultural competency as outlined in Tātai Pou.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality outputs under pressure.
  • The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.

The Data Systems team sits within the Ministry of Education’s Data and Insights group. We maintain and improve several core data systems that support the operations of New Zealand’s education sector—from Early Learning through to Tertiary.

 

Our work enables accurate and efficient service delivery by education providers and supports the Ministry’s data analysis capabilities. You’ll be joining a team that values learning, peer support, and continuous improvement, with a strong culture of collaboration and service.
