About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga
The Senior Analyst, Data and Reporting is responsible for bringing together school property-related data and providing analysis, context and insights.
This is a full-time, fixed term position for 12 months. You will be a member of the Data and Reporting branch of the Ministry’s School Property group. Your work will ensure that we are able to report on and answer questions about the progress of school property programmes and the condition of our assets, utilising robust, high quality data. An important feature of this role is improving our reponses to reactive requests while also being proactive so that we are better positioned for future requests. You will also support initiatives to improve the visibility of school property projects coming through the investment pipeline.
Your key priorities will include:
- Establishing data and reporting process documentation, following best practice
- Leading the development of, and supporting other team members in the creation of regular performance reports, dashboards, and other products that provide insights for our stakeholders
- Preparing responses to queries that typically have a quick-turnaround (e.g. requests from the Minister’s Office, media enquiries, other government agencies we partner with)
- Proactively preparing regular fact-sheets that provide a “one source of the truth” for recurring requests
- Undertaking exploratory analysis to create new insights about how we are performing across different portfolios, and why/why not
- Influencing good practice and building data reporting capability across the wider group
Salary range: $100,296 - $121,490 per annum + 3% KiwiSaver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

About you | Mōhou ake
To be successful in the role, you will have gained experience working in a complex organisation, providing technical and non-technical advice to producers and end-users of data. You will be someone who can work collaboratively across different teams, can manage and prioritise multiple requests where necessary, and have your “finger on the pulse” in anticipating what work we need to initiatite.
You will also offer:
- A track record of successfully producing performance reporting for a range of different audiences
- Experience and confidence using Excel (intermediate-advanced level) and Power BI. Experience using SQL and any other analytical tools is desirable but not required.
- Experience or an understanding of construction projects or asset management
- A working understanding of budgeting and financial reporting
- A proven ability in using data to identify trends, risks and opportunities, to guide business decision making
- Skills in coaching and mentoring others, and building team capabilty
- The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.
About our group and team | Mātau rōpū ake
The School Property group manages one of the largest property portfolios in Aotearoa New Zealand, composed of over 2,100 primary and secondary state schools and over 8,000 hectares of land with a carrying value of $33.5 billion. Our team is responsible for the portfolio, including school engagement, asset management, capital works delivery, investment planning and portfolio management.
We have a responsibility to invest in property solutions that demonstrate value for money while still delivering the right outcome for our schools and kura. Demand for new or improved school property across the country is high, and the way we meet these needs is to do so more efficiently. We have set financial and timeliness targets for our programme, and we’re looking to improve our planning and delivery, as well as working proactively and collaboratively with schools and the construction sector. This will ensure that our property projects deliver value and are part of an affordable and deliverable programme of works.
The School Property group is led by a Functional Chief Executive for School Property, who reports directly to the Minister for Education. In July 2025 the Government announced it will establish a Crown agent to manage school property, to be called the New Zealand School Property Agency (NZSPA). Implementation of the NZSPA is expected in 2026, subject to the legislation being passed.
