About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga

 

The Senior Advisor, Triage plays a key role in the intake and triaging of new sensitive claims lodged with the Ministry. The role ensures claimants experience a respectful and timely entry into the sensitive claims process. This Senior Advisor Triage is responsible for undertaking a range of intake and processing activities, including acknowledging new claims, confirming eligibility, and managing referrals where claims may need to be escalated to other groups.

 

This opportunity would preferably be based with the Sensitive Claims team in our National Office in Wellington, however a regional option would be considered for the right candidate.

 

In this role, you will be:

 

  • Responding to enquiries about the Sensitive Claims process.
  • Resolving issues and developing solutions.
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders to ensure claims are handled with care, accuracy, and professionalism, while maintaining the integrity of the sensitive claims process.
  • Monitoring, reporting and document management, maintaining accurate claims workflows, files, and databases, with secure handling of sensitive information.
  • Preparing high quality briefings and responses to information requests, as required.

 

Salary range: $85,225 - $103,071 per annum plus KiwiSaver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

As a Senior Advisor, Triage you work confidently with complex sensitive information and competing priorities. You deliver practical, well‑reasoned advice and build strong relationships across both stakeholders and the team.

 

You will also bring:

 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with sound analytical capability.
  • Proven experience providing clear, consistent, and decision‑ready advice.
  • The ability to build positive working relationships and manage competing priorities.
  • Excellent organisation, time management, and attention to detail.
  • Experience working with sensitive matters, in trauma-informed environments or with vulnerable individuals
  • Sound judgement, resilience, and a flexible, pragmatic approach to challenging work.
  • Experience in the public sector, with exposure to legal or compliance environments desirable.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent practical experience.
  • The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.

 

About our group and team | Mātau rōpū ake 

 

The Sensitive Claims team leads and delivers the Ministry’s redress process for addressing claims of historic abuse or neglect in state schools. A sensitive claim is defined as a claim where an individual alleges that they were abused or neglected at a state or residential special school and is seeking some form of redress. We ensure claims are managed in a respectful, mana-enhancing way, and that claimants and their whānau are at the centre of everything we do.

 

We also work closely with the Crown Response Office and other state redress agencies on delivering the Government’s Redress response to the recommendations of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in State Care.

 

Our group sits within Te Pou Taunaki | Learning Support group who are accountable for providing functional leadership to all learning support services spanning national functions and regional delivery, delivered either in-house, by education providers or by other providers.
