About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga
As Enterprise Architect (Data), you will work as a member of the Architecture Practice in Te Pou Kōrero | Digital & Data and your work will span multiple technical products, platforms and offerings. You will be responsible for developing and guiding data-centric technology strategy and architecture to support effective digital enablement of the education system.
You will shape and guide thinking and planning across the data lifecycle, from governance and modelling to integration, analytics, privacy, and emerging technologies, ensuring that data is treated as a strategic asset that supports evidence‑based decision making, service delivery, and equitable outcomes.
You will partner with business owners, product teams, program leads, and sector stakeholders to create a cohesive, future‑focused data and analytics architecture that is robust, scalable, secure, and aligned with Ministry and Government digital strategies.
As an Enterprise Architect (Data), you will:
- Develop data-focused strategic architecture roadmaps grounded in business needs, current state assessment, and future state data aspirations.
- Guide and provide architecture oversight of solutions for digital and data initiatives, guiding teams through planning, validation, and business case development.
- Shape and maintain enterprise wide data architecture, ensuring interoperability, quality, reuse, and continuous improvement in line with Ministry strategies.
- Support and influence investment decisions by evaluating data platforms, tools, products, and integration approaches.
- Promote strong data governance practices, ensuring alignment with privacy, security, Māori data sovereignty, and stewardship expectations.
- Mentor and guide teams to uplift understanding of the role and value of data architecture across the Ministry.
- Monitor emerging technologies and trends in data, analytics, AI, integration, and cloud to inform strategic decision making.
Salary range: $165,065 - $200,653 per annum + 3% KiwiSaver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

About you | Mōhou ake
To be successful in the role, you’ll be working collaboratively with key stakeholders. You will work with a numerous teams with diverse data needs and develop relationships across the organisation.
You will also bring:
- Significant experience across enterprise systems in complex organisations, with a strong emphasis on data platforms, integration, information architecture, and analytics ecosystems.
- Demonstrated capability in building partnerships and influencing outcomes across business and technical teams.
- Deep practical experience across architecture domains (data, information, solution, business, technical), with data as a core focus area.
- Experience creating future-state models, roadmaps, and EA artefacts using recognised methods and frameworks.
- Experience working in agile and product-centric delivery environments.
- The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.
The Architecture team is a well established group of collaborators within Digital with a keen focus on the continuous improvement of our digital estate. You will join a team of Enterprise, Solution and Domain architects and be engaged across a variety of different platforms, products and solutions with a strategic data lens.
About our group and team | Mātau rōpū ake
Matihiko | Digital holds the strategic lead on technology matters across the Ministry. This includes oversight of digital services in the Ministry, leading the cross-agency strategy ‘Connected Ako: Digital and Data for Learning’, enabling education system wide planning and investment in digital services, and ensuring the Ministry’s alignment with broader best-practice government digital and data direction and guidance.
Matihiko | Digital has two core responsibilities:
- operating and supporting an effective and efficient digitally resilient environment and systems for Ministry operations, including its safe and secure multi-site network, digital devices, productivity tools, and data infrastructure; and
- managing and supporting a range of internally and externally developed digital services to support the education sector’s core funding, enrolment, assessment, identity and services, including a safe and secure school’s managed network.
