The vision for Learning Support is that every child and young person will have access to learning opportunities that maximise their learning, promote social inclusion and facilitate smooth transition through to life-long learning.
The Advisor on Deaf Children (AoDC) provides support to families, whānau and educators to achieve desired outcomes for babies and children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The focus of the AoDC support is early years, birth to Year 3 at school.
- Providing specialist support to babies and children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Providing professional support and guidance to schools, teachers and families and building the capacity of those who are best placed to support the learning of these babies and children.
- Providing appropriate specialist intervention plans.
- Working as part of a trans-disciplinary team where a child’s needs are complex.
Salary range: $ 69,966 - $115,360 per annum + 3% KiwiSaver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

About you | Mōhou ake
To be successful you will need.
- A Master of Special Education (Sensory Disabilities/Hearing Impairment) or a Diploma of Adviser on Deaf and Hearing-Impaired Children. Please note, if you do not have either of these qualifications but you have a teacher of the deaf or speech language therapist or equivalent qualification with at least two years’ experience in that role we can consider your application, but you will be required to complete the Master of Special Education (Sensory Disabilities/Hearing Impairment) within four years after appointment.
- Knowledge and experience in language, communication and child development and in the educational and audiological management for children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Experience and knowledge of New Zealand Sign Language.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively with children, young people and their families and teachers across a diverse range of settings.
- The ability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangatawhenuatanga.
- The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.

Learning Support is a critical part of the Sector Enablement and Support Group in the Ministry. We are charged with leading the education sector in ensuring that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education.
Our Learning Support specialists work closely with families, whānau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and Māori medium settings and other agencies to help maximise learning outcomes and promote social inclusion.
