Assistive Technology (AT) is specialist equipment and technology that enables students with learning support needs to access the curriculum and achieve their learning goals. The Ministry provides funding to schools to support these needs through AT.
We are seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Learning Support practitioner to join our team as an Assistive Technology Coordinator (ATC) for the Canterbury | Chatham Islands region, based at our Christchurch office. In this role, you will:
- Support schools and Learning Support practitioners with AT applications.
- Ensure assistive technology aligns with students’ learning goals.
- Build capability across the Learning Support workforce in AT processes.
- Manage local trial equipment and contribute to regional moderation.
You’ll be part of a collaborative team, supported by National and Regional AT Coordinators, a Service Manager, and a Manager Integrated Services.
Salary range: $69,966 - $118,450 per annum + 3% KiwiSaver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

- Has a background in learning support or education.
- Understands and can apply a range of assistive technologies.
- Is confident with systems, processes, and documentation.
- Builds strong relationships and works collaboratively.
- Is committed to inclusive education and equitable outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide advice and guidance on AT applications to Ministry staff, schools, and external specialists (e.g., BLENNZ, Ko Taku Reo, RTLB).
- Share information about AT policies and processes via webinars, consultations, and team meetings.
- Collaborate with student support teams to assess AT needs and align assistive technology with learning objectives.
- Manage a local trial pool of equipment and liaise with regional assistive technology coordinators for specialist trials.
- Participate in monthly regional AT moderation and contribute to national consistency and quality.
- Coordinate administrative processes for AT service requests with help from Business Support.
- Engage in professional development and regional AT moderation meetings.
- The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.
About our group and team | Mātau rōpū ake
Te Mahau | Te Tai Runga provides leadership and integrated services to the education sector and others. This includes learning support; education advice and regulation functions for schools and early learning services; and advice and support with curriculum. We also share practice and learnings collaboratively with other Te Mahau and Ministry groups to support insights driven guidance, design, and policy.
We work closely with the Early Childhood and Schooling sectors, providers, and communities to provide support, expertise, and resources to help children and young people reach their full potential.
